Ardent Fidelity

reflections on a Christ-centered life by Chris Krycho

My latest over at Mere Orthodoxy (and, I think, a good one):

One of the most significant moves Christians can make in the culture wars, then, is to drop the sense of entitlement and the accompanying resentment when things don’t go our way, and to forge in their place a cheerful, Chestertonian (which is to say: friendly and witty and incisive all at once) confidence in the truth of our positions and a deeper trust in the sovereignty of God. When attacked we can respond with good cheer. But how?

excellent, Chris. i see so many living out of fear of whatever … it drives everything they do. we are not to live with a spirit of fear … but of power and of love and of a sound mind. fear is not from God. (not to be confused with natural fear that tells us something is wrong and we need to protect ourselves.) but paranoid fear that drives us and controls us is not from God. i know a family who raised their sons NOT to be like the children in another family. EVERYthing was, “We don’t want to be like the _____.” it completely ruled every decision they made. i hate that. we are to live FOR Christ, not in fear of this world.

Yikes! Fear is an awful, unbiblical, wholly enslaving basis from which make decisions – and it doesn’t matter whether those decisions are in the personal realm or the political; the result will be tragedy (save, perhaps, that the grace of God is greater than all our sins, this one included).

unfortunately, i know way too many people who live from the point of fear. “I don’t want a marriage like ____.” “I don’t want kids like _____.”

i think it’s often subtle, but it’s huge. we need to live to become, towards, not avoiding or running from.

I mostly agree, though I think we actually should actively run away from sin – but running away from sin without doing so entirely in terms of running toward Christ is a sure way to just run into other sins.

absolutely … and running toward Christ is a positive. saying yes to anything means saying no to many other things.

Great message Chris, a really good reminder, I need to change my perspective on a few things. Also, a good reminder by Ame, I had first heard this at a little leadership training class at my church called Equip at one point they stressed that while it is neccessary to recognize and strive to avoid sin and ungodliness as Chris said, fixating on anything with an attitude of “I must not be like that” or some such just binds you to it, and may (depending on the circumstances) build up unforgiveness in your heart among other problems. Much better is to look at it more like “That is wrong, if I’m doing that I should stop. What is the Christ honoring thing to do instead?”
