Regret Is Not Repentance

Most of us feel regret, to some extent or another, after we sin. Whether it’s being rude to a friend, fantasizing lustfully, envying a neighbor’s car, or gossiping, we all know the way our conscience pricks us in the aftermath. We often respond – rightly – with regret over our actions.

Then, having regretted our sin, we call it a day. We move on.

And a day, or an hour, or a minute later, we’re doing the same thing again.

A Theology of Vocation

It has become increasingly apparent to me over the past three to five years that evangelicalism suffers from a serious deficit of careful thought to our theology of vocation. Though evangelicals pay lip service to the notion that every believer’s work is valuable in the sight of God, in practice we do not act as though this is true. We do not, deep down, seem to actually believe that working as a software engineer or an electrician or a clerk or a manager or a lawyer or even a doctor is really important and God-honoring. As I launch a new theology blog, I thought it might be helpful to outline (for myself as well as my at least initially few readers) my approach here. I aim to write broadly, addressing a wide number of topics here, but they will always be viewed through the lens of the glory of God in Christ – a phrase from Thomas Schreiner I am increasingly fond of.
